Ball valves are a type of quarter-turn valve that uses a rotating ball or sphere into which a hole has been drilled to serve as the valve’s flow passage. These valves are very common in piping applications to control the flow of a fluid or gas and are known for their simple reliable operation, long service life, and ease of use. Common valves feature a handle that is manually operated to open or close the valve. Movement of the valve handle through 90o of rotation (1/4 turn) changes the valve state from fully opened to fully closed. Ball valves are often employed as shut-off valves and are generally preferred over other valve types such as gate valves when shut-off is the primary intent. Although some designs of ball valves can meter flow to some degree, they generally are not used as metering valves. Ball valves while often manually actuated can be equipped with powered actuators for automated control.
This article will present information on the top manufacturers and suppliers of ball valves in the USA. More information about ball valves and their construction, types, and applications may be found in our related guide All About Ball Valves.
